Why Are We Learning This?

Along with bathroom requests, every ELA teacher has heard this question hundreds to thousands of times.

And to be fair, sometimes it’s a valid question. Why are students making dioramas, posters, and stories about what they did last summer?  NWC now has an answer to this age-old question: because real-world problems require you to learn it!
Meaningful learning happens when students are learning in meaningful contexts, and NWC creates that in every module by thrusting students in real-world scenarios.  So now, students aren’t writing stories about their weekend; they’re writing stories to pitch to video game companies.  Likewise, students aren’t writing essays about school uniforms anymore; now, they’re writing emails to the mayor recommending raises for certain employees.  When students are constantly learning and applying skills to real-world problems, teachers will never hear the question, “Why are we learning this?” again.  We cannot, however, promise you won’t hear more requests for the bathroom pass.  We aren’t that good.
