Valuing College and Career Standards

School districts around the country are struggling with how to incorporate college

and career readiness standards into the curriculum. Everyone sees the value of them, but how do we include them?  Some schools are leveraging electives, others are using assemblies, and others are inviting speakers during lunch.  But if we really value these 21st century standards, we’ll teach them in ELA classes…not in a cafeteria.  And that’s exactly what NWC accomplishes in every module.
Along with gaining exposure to real world problems and products, students engage with real-world experts.  This expert not only talks about his/her career, but they also provide insight and advice into solving the task at hand.  Throughout the learning experience, students are frequently asked to reflect on the careers and 21st century skills that are introduced to them.  While optional research activities invite them to dive even deeper, college and career readiness standards are cohesively weaved into every module.
